Court Develops Domestic Violence Intervention Program

Lyndhurst: The Lyndhurst Municipal Court has developed a new program dedicated to better addressing the needs of defendants and victims in cases involving crimes of violence. The Domestic Violence Diversion Program is designed to identify cases where offenders can be held accountable for their actions through participating in programming focused on preventing future criminal behavior. This program is intended to promote accountability, provide resources for both the accused and the victim, and reduce recidivism while protecting victim rights.

In developing this program, the Court consulted with and sought input from victim advocates, prosecutors, local judges, and its Probation Department. To learn more about the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, click here.

Court Awarded $25,000 Grant to Accept Electronic Citations

Lyndhurst: The Court received a $25,000 grant through the Ohio Department of Public Safety to expand the electronic capability of the Court by providing remote access to the six local police departments within the jurisdiction to submit tickets electronically to the Court.

Benefits of utilizing electronic citations (commonly referred to as “e-citations”) include: (1) reducing the amount of time it takes an officer to issue a citation; (2) improving officer safety by reducing the amount of time an officer is parked on the side of a busy road or highway to issue a citation; (3) reducing errors and illegible citations; and (4) saving officers time by eliminating the need to drive paper citations to the courthouse.

The Court anticipates implementing this software sometime in the fall of 2020.

Court Awarded $60,000 Grant to Upgrade Video Conferencing Equipment

Lyndhurst: The Court received a $60,000 grant through the Ohio Supreme Court’s Remote Technology Grant to significantly enhance the Court’s video conferencing capabilities and its ability to conduct hearings remotely.

The grant funds will be utilized to install three video conferencing devices at the Court – one in each courtroom and one in the prosecutor’s office. The grant funds will also allow for the purchase and installation of a video conferencing device at the jail facilities operated by the cities of Lyndhurst, Highland Heights, Mayfield Heights, and Cuyahoga County. The Court will now have improved capabilities to conduct hearings with inmates at those jails and anticipates conducting other hearings – arraignments, change of plea hearings, and sentencings – remotely as well. Prosecutors will also be able to conduct pretrials remotely. The Court anticipates the video conferencing devices to be installed in the Court and jails by the end of July.

Court Awarded $100,000 Grant to Modernize the Court

Lyndhurst: The Court received a $100,000 grant through the Ohio Supreme Court’s 2019 Technology Grant Fund. This is one of the largest grants ever awarded by the Ohio Supreme Court to a single-judge, municipal court.

Utilizing the grant funds, the Court will be replacing its current case management software (CMS) and modernizing the Court. With the new CMS, the Court’s technology will be on par with the more technologically advanced municipal courts in Ohio. With the new CMS, the Court will:

Accept online payments, which will make it more convenient for individuals to satisfy monetary obligations to the Court;

Implement electronic filing, which allows case documents, such as pleadings and motions to be filed with the Court electronically;

Make all orders, pleadings and motions accessible online; and

Be able to send text notifications to remind individuals of upcoming hearings, appointments or when their next scheduled payment is due.

These improvements will make the Court more accessible, convenient and efficient for all Court users.
